HIGH VELOCITY (Benz) tet 38" M. -Mla. Dor. (Duke of Burgundy X Tet. Betty Benz) What can I say….this one grew on me over time! At a full 8", I couldn't bring myself to part with this huge red, but as it was not my form and color was not what I was after, I never bred with it either. How times change. After seeing Jamie Gossard's monster red MEGATRON, I became obsessed with HUGE and resurrected this cultivar and put it in a new growing area….and voila-I had forgotten just how spectacular it was. I'm not sure I had ever realized this daylily was double about 30% of the time, and blooms shown here are not uncommon. Then again, I had never seen it in a well-grown mature clump. Well, every single visitor asked about HIGH VELOCITY, marveled at its size and pleaded for a release date. So here it is. Plants are huge; scapes are thick and strong, and nicely branched with a bud-count of 20 or more, rare for a bloom this size. Blooms are open at dawn, perfectly flat and the huge green throat holds in hottest sun. Also rare is the consistency…. HIGH VELOCITY maintained its 8" blooms all through the bloom season, displaying consistency and perfection more typical of a 3" Siloam. Very fragrant.
