ROYAL SCEPTRE (Benz) tet 36" M. Ev. (Double Agent X Tet. Brent Gabriel ROYAL SCEPTRE is the finest purple double we have seen, either tetraploid or diploid. We have acquired nearly all the purple doubles, and most have poor color, and very few are as consistently double here as their pastel counterparts. We selected 2 beautiful purple doubles from a long run of this cross by hybridizer Janet Benz. While we have seen an occasional semi-double or single bloom on ROYAL SCEPTRE, it almost always blooms full peony double once established. Color is an extraordinary shade of deep violet purple; brighter and smoother than the color seen in most single flowered purple tets. ROYAL SCEPTRE is sunfast here even in 90 degree full sun. Due to the color and substance, we have begun to work ROYAL SCEPTRE and its sib into my big purple singles, like BARNEY and IMPERIAL DECREE. Foliage is fully evergreen, but tough and winter hardy here in Ohio. Scapes are straight and nicely branched with 2-3 laterals and a bud-count of about 20. Fertile both ways, but pollen is easier. Fragrant and a beautiful garden accent. SOLD OUT
