(Benz) tet 34" M. Dor. (Duke of Burgundy X Tet. Barbara Mitchell) From the first time I saw BARBARA MITCHELL, I've dreamed of blooming a bright red version of this flower. Of the thousands of seedlings we bloomed from Tet. BARBARA MITCHELL, ALPHA MALE comes closest to that goal by a wide margin. Petals on this 6" deep burgundy red can stretch the ruler at 4" petals across. Opens as flat as a coaster, despite the overlapped form and extremely heavy plastic-like substance. Beautifully ruffled for a red, and exhibits a thin white lacy filigree, and now and then a double bloom will even appear. Has proven an incredible parent, throwing large sunfast blooms up to 7" with excellent substance and form in shades from rose-pink to nearly black. Destined to be a legendary parent, and I don't feel I have even scratched the surface of its potential. Huge plants with nice strong scapes and 2-3 laterals with 25 buds. Easy parent both ways and very fragrant. $200.00
